Newsreel from 1942 shows 1918 World War I footage of a review of troops in France by Chief of Staff (and subsequently Brigadier General) Douglas MacArthur along with General John J. Pershing, head of the United States' National Army. Some French officers are also visible in the gathering. The military officers watch as U.S. Army troops, presumably of MacArthur's 42nd "Rainbow" Division march. Pershing and MacArthur review the troops along with other senior military officers. Film opens with map showing lower France and Mediterranean areas. However, it shows images covering primarily the French Riviera (or Côte d'Azur) under German occupation during World War II, in 1943 or 1944. German infantry march along a road. A flight of German FW-190 Fighter airplanes flies inland from the Mediterranean Sea and crosses low above a harbor. Change of scene shows a single fighter plane buzzing the Marseille Port. (It looks like a P-47 with invasion stripes. But It does not draw any anti-aircraft fire.) Camera tracks it from vantage point at the Marseille Basilica, high above the harbor. Brief view of the Basilica as the aircraft passes. A glimpse of the Marseille Port below from the Basilica. View of the Marseille Transporter Bridge designed by Ferdinand Arnodin and built in 1905. (It was destroyed after these films were made, in 1944.) A German soldier peering through binoculars in front of a 2 cm Flak 30/38/Flakvierling, quad anti-aircraft gun position. Opening scene shows French Nieuport biplanes in aerial combat with German airplanes. Many are engaged in a massive dog fight. One monoplane is seen hit and falling toward the ground. Next, two French aircraft are seen returning to their base. They fly over a hangar where a crashed airplane sits with tail in the air. Near the hanger are several airplanes in various stages of maintenance. Mechanics are moving one. An airplane taxis in front of the hangar. Scene shifts to closeup of a Lafayette Escadrille Indian logo painted on a metal structure. Scene shifts to a formal award ceremony for some pilots and crews. Their squadron members are lined up behind them in front of a line of aircraft. The view is from behind a formation of French soldiers with rifles, rendering salutes. Next, French soldiers parade on the airdrome, led by a military band. At this point the scene phases out as a fireball is superimposed on a map of Europe, signifying World War 2. Adolf Hitler is seen in closeup near the Eiffel Tower, when he visits Paris, France following its occupation by German forces in 1940. Film opens showing a Captain, Intelligence officer with the U.S 8th Airforce 97th Bombardment Group, debriefing Captain William “Bill” Musselwhite, Commander of the 342nd Bombardment Squadron, about his unit's experience participating in the first Eighth Air Force heavy bomber mission in World War II, attacking the Rouen-Sotteville marshalling yards in France, on August 17, 1942. Referring to a map, he asks Captain Musselwhite where his Squadron dropped their bombs. Musselwhite points out the path of his units aircraft and that his first aircraft overshot the target, but those following dropped "on range," bracketing the target on left and right, with one "stick" of bombs going right down the middle. He mentions one ship straying over the town of Rouen, itself.
