The first draft lottery being conducted in Washington DC, under the 1940 Selective Service Act of 1940
The first Selective Service lottery conducted in Washington, DC, on October 29, 1940, in the United States. An American Legion member, in uniform, poses with Mrs. Robert Bell and her son and a young woman (her daughter?) after her son's draft number (158) had been the first one drawn in the Washington DC Lottery. Dr. Baxter talks with Mrs. Bell and asks why she exclaimed out loud when the first number was drawn. Dr. Baxter gives her the capsule in which her son's draft number was contained. Chief Iron Whip introduces himself to the Native American Indian tribal council. He belong to tribe Sioux or the first nation people. Sioux have three main divisions: The Santee or Dakota who reside to the east of Dakotas, Minnesota and Northern Iowa; The Yankton or Nakota who reside in the Minnesota river area; the Lakota who are the western most Sioux. Chief Iron Whip uses Indian sign language to introduce himself.

Nutritious food for U.S. Army soldiers in the United States. Scientists undertake experiments in the University of Minnesota for the development of nutritious food for American soldiers during World War II. A woman monitors tubes in a laboratory experiment. University of Minnesota physiologist Dr. Ancel Keys, who heads the experiments, speaks seated at a table. He says that if a soldier has vitamins and no food he would still starve. He says that it is not vitamins or pills that imparts energy but nutritious food in a wide variety. Few men in a bread factory taking vitamin enriched flour and using it to bake bread for the soldiers. Men kneading dough and arranging it in a tray. A man keeping the tray in an oven. Two men beside the oven. One of the men takes the tray out from the oven with a gloved hand. Quartermaster Corps cooking fresh food for the soldiers.
