Activities of U.S. 2nd Marine Division during the Battle of Tarawa during World War 2. U.S. marines firing at their own abandoned landing craft in the surf, where Japanese soldiers have infiltrated at night and set up machine guns. M3 Stuart light tank on sand at water's edge, with image of an elephant and word, "Colorado" painted on its side. On day two of the assault, marines, are still seen occupying a limited beachhead. They fire mortars at the Japanese defenders. Scene further inland, show hill with destroyed Japanese fortification and smoke rising, as Marines fire their weapons. Two elephants in harnesses are seen at work, lifting large iron radiators from rubble at the side of a road in town. They place the radiators on a flat bed trailer. Next, they tow a large steel framework from the rubble. A large group of spectators watches these goings on, and some feed one of the elephants, putting a piece of fruit in its trunk. The keeper directs the elephants to other heavy objects in the rubble, which they pick up and carry with their trunks, placing them on the flat bed trailer. With crowds still watching, the zoo keeper leads leads the elephants as they pull the loaded trailer along the street, while pedestrians watch. (World War II period).

As hula dancers finish, elephant handler (mahout), Kirpa Swami, brings forward a baby elephant, named Mari, that Mrs. Gandhi is presenting as a gift to the children of Honolulu. Spokesperson Eileen Anderson, acknowledges the gift, before a large crowd of spectators. Prime Minister Gandhi, at the microphone, explains that the elephant is a symbol of strength, of hard work, and in India, of good fortune, or good luck. Kirpa Swami brings Mari across the grass, accompanied by elephant handlers, Gwen Yoshimura and Larry Zolton. As Mari swings her trunk, Mrs. Gandhi says, "she is saluting you all." Scene shifts to the airport, where the Prime Minister's Air India passenger airplane is parked on the runway tarmac, displaying an American flag in the pilot's window. Prime Minister Gandhi speaks at the steps to the aircraft, extending the good wishes of the people of India to the people of the United States. She turns and waves from the top of the steps.
