German officers surrender to Allied Forces at end of World War II

Film begins with nighttime bombardments of rockets and artillery. Then at one minute after midnight, on May 9th, 1945, the guns stop. Next, a day earlier, German Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel enters a conference room on May 8th, accompanied by German staff officers. He salutes with his Marshal's baton and takes a seat. He signs surrender document. Soviet Marshal Georgy Zhukov stands before being seated. British Air Marshal, Sir Arthur Tedder, is seen signing the document along with Marshal Zhukov. General Carl Spaatz, Commander of Strategic Air Forces in Europe, shakes hands with Marshal Zhukov. Several scenes of battlefield cemeteries are seen next. German officer prisoners are seen from the back as they walk with hands behind their heads. Recently captured German prisoners of war build their own barbed wire containment just before the end of World War II

Several weeks before the end of World War II in Europe, recently captured German prisoners of war, still wearing their uniforms, work under guard, building their own barbed wire enclosure. Some carry and place large timber fence posts. Others dig post holes and string barbed wire. Others fashion fence posts, using saws and hatchets (to sharpen their ends). Several American soldiers supervise and stand guard.

Joseph Goebbels is finishing remarks, to the effect that we can still have a life, during a gathering of Nazi party officials, in a room somberly decorated as if commemorating a funeral (possibly that of Paul von Hindenburg, in 1934). Small pictures of Hindenburg and Hitler flank a large imposing painting of Hindenburg, over a mantle. All gathered join Goebbels in saluting and repeating "Heil" three times. Next, Adolf Hitler is seen, speaking and haranguing audiences in several different venues and circumstances. Politician Hitler, in civilian clothes, having been appointed Chancellor, stands with German President Paul von Hindenburg and Vice-Chancellor, Franz von Papen, in 1933. Hitler, in uniform, signs a document during a ceremony.

Scenes depicting uneasy relations between Nazi party and German Imperial rule during Weimar Republic in 1933.

Opening scene shows many thousands of Nazi Storm Troopers (Sturmabteilung) gathered in a Nazi rally at Zeppelin Field in Nuremberg. They all render the Nazi salute as the German National Anthem is played over loudspeakers. Complete change of scene shows a military parade including many World War I veterans. They march past Crown Prince Wilhelm, who is seen in close-up, saluting the marchers with a classic military salute. (Several standing with him render Nazi salutes.) The parade ends with the National Anthem and massed flags. Next, German President, Paul von Hindenburg, leads a contingent of officials, walking past assembled military units. He strolls into an area where he exchanges salutes with uniformed men who render the classic (not Nazi) hand salute. Hindenburg salutes some disabled veterans of World War I. Film shifts back again to the Nazi rally at Zeppelin Field, where Adolf Hitler shakes hands with Storm troopers.
