Opening scene shows a dozen newsmen and photographers lining steps to the U.S. War Department Pentagon building, in Arlington, Virginia. A 1947 Packard Custom Clipper Club Sedan pulls up to the curb. It displays a 5-star general's insignia on its bumper.A military policeman salutes as an Army officer opens the rear door and exchanges salutes with retired General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who is now dressed in civilian clothes. (Eisenhower is the President of Columbia University, in New York, at this time. He is here to meet with U.S. Secretary of War, James Vincent Forrestal.) Closeup of Eisenhower as he walks toward and up the Pentagon steps, accosted by photographers along the way. He pauses as he goes up the steps to allow the picture taking. At the top of the steps, he removes his overcoat. More closeups as he reaches the top step and enters the building. Scene shifts to closeup of photographers, including an Army one, taking pictures. (Note: The War department was renamed the Department of Defense when President Truman signed the National Security Bill on August 10, 1949.)

With his back to the camera, Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, stands at a microphone, reading a citation. He then steps forward to decorate Commander Alexander Kelly Tyree with the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Bowfin (SS-287), on the Seventh War Patrol of that submarine during the period 25 January 1945 to 25 March 1945. Admiral Nimitz then proceeds to decorate other officers and sailors of the Bowfin, as Navy photographers take photographs. The Admiral with two officers and a sailor hold hand salutes a while as the ceremony is finishing. Admiral Nimitz then steps from the Bowfin, across another submarine docked next to it, and down to his launch. He salutes, as the launch pulls away. (Another view of Nimitz stepping into his launch is inserted here, as well.) Glimpse of the officers back on the Bowfin. (Note: Commander Tyree subsequently received a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Navy Cross, following the War Patrol of the Bowfin from 29 May 1945 to 4 July 1945.)

U.S. armor and infantry advancing in Germany during final days of World War 2, in Europe. American soldiers riding atop an M5A1 Stuart light tank move slowly along a dirt path in war-torn area of Germany. They follow another Stuart tank, loaded down with equipment and supplies. The tanks raise dust as they proceed. Scene shifts to U.S. infantrymen walking along a dirt road surrounded by damaged and destroyed buildings. A German civilian man passes them headed in the opposite direction. A U.S. soldier guards two German prisoners of war, as they walk with hands on their heads, past am M5A1 Stuart tank parked near a building.
