Buildup of South Vietnamese military with American advice and assistance
American aid to South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, speaking at a Gettysburg College commencement, on April 4, 1959, notes, among other things, that the cost of defending freedom must be paid in many places. 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident brings the U.S. into direct, active involvment in the Vietnam conflict

Vietnamese conflict intensifies as Viet Cong guerillas receive modern arms from North Vietnam and China.
Opening scene shows South Vietnamese soldiers stacking a large cache of intercepted arms destined for the Viet Cong, including a million rounds of small arms ammunition. Also seen are AK-47 rifles and mortar rounds that contain Chinese markings. Camera focuses on the Chinese writing.
