Views of a Merchant Seamans club in New York City providing rest and relaxation opportunities for allied Merchant Marines and Seaman from all over the world during World War II. View of the club building exterior at 109 West 43rd Street, New York City. Sign over doorway reads, "American Theatre Wing - Merchant Seamans Club". Men enter the club and their identification is checked at the door. Inside, they enjoy drinks, a game of darts, food, card games, and socializing with women present at the club and sometimes celebrities. Famous cartoonist Otto Soglow is present to do caricature drawings of some of the men, for fun, in the Food Bar area of the club. Soglow is seen creating a cartoon drawing. A Russian woman Merchant Seaman steps forward and Soglow notes that it is a nice change for him to get to draw a woman. American actress Shirley Booth comes forward and welcomes the Russian woman to the Club. Booth reads a welcome message that is partly in Russian. The Russian woman says that she knows Ms. Booth from her role on the radio as Miss Duffy in the show Duffys Tavern. The Russian woman describes her duties in the Russian Merchant Marines. She answers questions from Shirley Booth and describes her training and motivation in fighting the war.

On Feb. 12 and 13, 1951, elements of the U.S. Army 2nd Infantry Division, including 38th Infantry Regiment, suffered severe losses in combat with superior Chinese forces, near Hoengsong,during the Korean War. Photos shot three weeks later show the carnage on a frozen battleground. Remnants of a destroyed U.S. field piece are surrounded by dead U.S. Army soldiers frozen on snow-covered ground. A severely damaged U.S. halftrack sits in the dirt. An unidentified jumble of burned out war machinery. Damaged 20mm dual mount anti-aircraft guns. U.S. Marines, of the 7th Regiment, in full field gear, entering the area for the first time since the February battle. They march over a snow-covered road, past remnants of the U.S. Army convoy that was fighting its way out of the area besieged by Chinese forces on all sides. A destroyed U.S. Army truck. Sign next to wreckage reads:"38th I.FL Co CP." A dead American soldier frozen in a rice paddy. Smoke rising from Korean village buildings burning in background, above terraced landscape. More views of wrecked equipment and fallen soldiers. A mountain pass in the background. A destroyed truck. Suddenly black smoke starts rising in the background. American veterans of World War 1 return to Paris not long after the war's end. They fill two open buses, each containing a cinematographer with camera, recording the events. A few women are included in the groups. They drive down the Boulevard Champs Elysees. Arc de Triomphe seen behind them.
Jazz being performed in a Paris night club after World War I
Zelli’s Royal Box night club in Paris, owned by Joe Zelli and located at 16 bis rue Fontaine. Several tables set in the club. People seated at the tables. The room is decorated. Bottles of alcoholic beverages are evident everywhere. An African American dancer performs in the center of the dance floor. Audience cheers and claps. An African American ensemble plays jazz and patrons dance. The trumpet player is Crickett Smith, and the drummer is USA Army Corporal Eugene Bullard. Patrons are seen on the dance floor under a chandelier with streamers. A balcony is seen above, where so-called "Royal Boxes"were arranged allowing patrons to watch festivities below. (Note: Bullard lived a storied life. Among other things, he served in World War 1 as one of 200 U.S. servicemen who flew for France. He was the first African American combat pilot and the first to shoot down enemy aircraft, and was decorated multiple times for valor. He was living in the Montmartre section of Paris after World War 1, which was known as a center for American Jazz music. He learned to play drums from the pioneer jazz musician Louis Mitchell and played in the house band at Zellis nightclub before taking over the management of a nightclub called Le Grand Duc, in 1924. The 2006 movie "Flyboys" portrayed members of the Lafayette Flying Corps and included a character based on Bullard.)
