Seventeen of the world's best ice skating barrel jumpers compete in the 11th annual competition at Grossinger's Catskill Resort in the Catskill Mountains of New York near the village of Liberty. Skaters are seen circling the ice rink to gain speed, and jumping over lines of barrels. Scenes of jumpers failing to clear all the barrels in their attempts. Only 3 contenders manage to clear 15 barrels. Only one, Jim Waldo, of Portland, Oregon, is seen successfully clearing 16 barrels to win the event. He receives his trophy from New York Yankees Baseball team's star catcher, Yogi Berra.
Mardi Gras event to mark pre-Lenten celebrations in the French Quarter of New Orleans, United States. On the last day of the Mardi Gras event decorative floats move on the streets in New Orleans. The spectators stand on either side of the street cheering for the floats. Krewe participants from floats throw trinkets to spectators. Spectators catch Mardi Gras throws from passing floats.
The U.S. Army 442nd Regimental Combat Team, composed of Japanese-Americans, is welcomed back after three years of combat in Europe, during World War II. The Combat Team soldiers aboard their trooop ship entering New York Harbor. They display their logo and motto, "shoot the works," on the side of the ship. New York City skyline visible behind the ship. Family and friends gathered at a harbor to receive and welcome them. Since many of the soldiers are from Hawaii, their reception committee includes several hula dancers who also bedeck them with garlands (leis) of flowers as they disembark from the ship. The Combat Team assembles on the wharf and marches away.
