First in-silo launch of liquid fueled ICBM Titan VS-1 from Silo Launch Test Facility,Vandenberg. Code named 'Silver Saddle' the Titan carries a dummy second stage. Ground level surface of silo. Flames ignite from two silo ducts after initial ignition. Missile emerges from ground and climbs up in to sky. 3 May 1961. (Note: This launch was an engineering test of the range safety destruct system as well as a prototype Titan II silo, as that missile was still over a year away from its first launch. Following first stage burnout, the dummy second stage, which was filled with water, was detonated. The water formed an ice cloud that was then photographed. This experiment would later be performed on two Saturn I launches.)

Activities involved in a LGM-30 Minuteman missile operational test launch at Vandenberg AFB, Lompoc. A crew of two men comes out of a silo. Task Force Munitions team at work on the missile components in an underground silo. View of the MIRV, Multiple (three) independently targeted reentry vehicles (warheads). The missile booster is removed, loaded on a transporter, transferred to the missile complex ,and loaded in the launch facility. Reentry system is added to the missile and start up is accomplished.
