The training and life of United States Navy recruits at U.S. Navy training center in Bainbridge, Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois and Naval Base San Diego in California. The sailors watch a movie which depicts historic navy sailors on old masted sailing ships as they fire naval guns at another ship. The reenactment is of a 18th century or 19th century naval battle. June 9, 1944. Sand flats seen at low tide in Normandy, France. Allied forces fighting their way inland during the Normandy invasion (Three days after D-Day) in World War II. Landing craft and destroyed buildings on the beaches of Normandy. German steel beach obstacles have been stacked out of the way. A United States Sherman DD tank sunk in sand. Badly damaged LCT-25 on the beach at Normandy, with her cargo of half-tracks still aboard and remains of the first one off, sitting at her ramp where it was hit by a German shell. Higgins Boat riddled with bullet holes. Scene shifts to January 1944 when United States Army troops descend from a troop transport ship into LCT-504 for practice maneuvers in the Chesapeake Bay. A soldier operates a Higgins Boat. Another soldier directs a Higgins Boat to the shore. Troops hit the beach in Higgins Boats driven by U.S. Coast Guardsmen from the Attack Transport ship, USS Samuel Chase (APA-26). United States troops carry equipment or belongings as they board ships to England in February 1944. Views of live aboard transport ships in convoys crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The freighter SS Yorkmar, owned by the Bethlehem Steel Company, and operated by the Calmar Line, is aground on an open beach north of Grays Harbor, Washington State, United States. A ship's officer and some members of the crew are seen briefly,on the shore. A Coast Guard helicopter hovers over her stern while carrying a line out to the ship from the shore. Crew members are seen standing in the water near the Yorkmar,and pulling on a line from the ship to the shore. Others climb a rope ladder up the side of the Yorkmar. The crew remains with the ship awaiting tide to refloat her. (Note: The SS Yorkmar, seen here, should not be confused with a ship of the same name that was torpedoed in 1943. This ship was originally a Liberty Ship, launched in 1944, and named the "Walter Kidde." After the war, she was operated by Calmar SS Corporation of New York and renamed the "Yorkmar," in 1947.)
