Destroyed German equipment, including some captured American armor, lines the edge of a road near Esperia, Italy during World War II. The German armored vehicles, tanks, antitank guns and trucks were destroyed by U.S. fighter bombers of the 12th Army Air Forces, on May 16, 1944, while supporting the French Expeditionary Force assault on the German Gustav line in that area. French troops stand on the side of a road. Troops examine some of the destroyed armor.

Opening scene shows New Zealand 19th RHQ tank in Mignano Montelungo, as the 24th New Zealand Battalion re-enacts its entry into the ruins of Monte Cassino, on March 26, 1944. In this restaging, 24th Battalion infantrymen are shown moving through rubble of destroyed town, firing small arms and one throwing a hand grenade. Narrator identifies "Hangman's Hill," (which was held by the 1st battalion 9th Gurkha Rifles) at Monte Cassino. In this restaging , New Zealanders, scramble over rubble, and dig out a "wounded" comrade, while explosions occur in background. Medics "attend" to him. Other NZ troops fire small arms from behind rubble barriers. A huge explosion occurs in background. A British artillery piece (obscured by debris) fires rounds. Infantrymen fire small arms. Elements of the U.S. 36th Infantry Division engaging in the Battle of San Pietro, during World War 2. Opening scene shows U.S. infantrymen of the 141st Infantry Regiment synchronizing their watches on H-Hour, D-Day, the 15th of December, 1944. Next they move forward 400 yardsfrom their positions and are immediately pinned down by heavy artillery fire from German defenders. Soldiers of the 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the 143rd Infantry Regiment advance 100 yards and hunker down at barbed wire barrier close to German defense line. They also come under heavy German artillery fire. American Sherman tanks enter the Town of San Pietro to find and destroy the German artillery interfering with the American advances. Views of U.S. tanks on the move. Narrator states that 16 tanks were dispatched along the road to San Pietro. Three reached the outskirts. German gunfire destroys two of these.
