Col. Oliver North about newspaper publicity. Mr. Nields asks him about his discussions with Robert McFarlane. He also asks whether Lt. Col. shredded some documents on 21st of January and if they contained anything that could be damaging to the President. North's counsel, Brendan Sullivan, objects. North and his prosecutor whisper. Mr. Nields asks North about political damage to the President.
Professional golfer Sam Snead wins the Dallas Open professional golf tournament in Texas. The players include John McMullin, Julius Boros and Gary Player. Sam birdies the first hole in a sudden death struggle. Views of the golf players as they swing and during putting on green. A crowd at the golf course watches the game.
Troops of the U.S. 9th Armored Division are assembled at the Schlörplatz in Weiden, Bavaria, to hear from their commanding General, John W. Leonard. Some stand in tanks and other armored vehicles, while others stand at attention. Next scene shows the troops at parade rest. They face an improvised speaker stand with a color guard and the American flag and two unit flags. Behind it is the Gustav von Schlör monument. To the right, a road sign indicates 90 km to Regensburg. View shifts to show backs of the soldiers, with arms and hands in parade rest position, waiting for their Commander. Next, General Leonard is seen standing somewhat below and in front of the colors and color guards. He is in battle gear and appears very relaxed and informal, as he addresses the troops.View, from a distance, shows the large number of troops assembled and listening. More views, including some closeups, of the troops listening. Closeup of some soldiers reacting to the good news, by waving and doffing their helmets. Occasion is the 20th anniversary of the U.S. 6th Fleet. U.S. Navy Admiral John S. McCain, Jr., Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Naval Forces, Europe (CINCUSNAVEUR) is seen with U.S. Navy Vice Admiral William I. Martin, Commander,U.S. Navy Sixth Fleet, and U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Edward C. Outlaw, Commander Fleet Air Mediterranean ( COMFLTAIRMED). They are conversing on the bridge of the USS Independence (CVA-62) in the Mediterranean Sea. Outlaw smokes a pipe. McCain is holding a cigar. Martin's back is to the camera early in the sequence. McCain and Martin are doing most of the talking as Outlaw listens. At TC:01:13, camera turns toward Admiral Martin, who soon puffs on a cigar he had been holding. Sequence ends with closeups of Admiral McCain speaking.
John Ward leaps from a ledge outside a hotel window in New York. He stands on the 17th floor of the hotel. People crowd in front of the hotel and look at him. Tourists in a bus look at him. After his suicide, his body is seen on the street as authorities gather. Horrified onlookers gather.
