General Motors guidelines for maintaining private cars during World War II, when none were manufactured in the U.S.A.
General Motors film entitled: "It's up to US," explains how to maintain private cars during World War 2, when all manufacturers switched to production of war materiel. Bugler, in U.S. Army uniform, blows reveille. Montage of American scenes, including homes and gardens; mountains; forests and lumberjacks felling a tree; an oil well gusher spewing crude oil; open pit mining operations; Niagara falls; flock of sheep grazing; workers picking cotton and it being delivered to a processing plant by horse-drawn wagon; a large timber log being cut into boards in a lumber mill; steel being manufactured for the war effort; a woman housewife or homemaker saving foods in a refrigerator in a vintage 1940s kitchen; a man cutting his lawn; a woman vacuuming her carpet; a woman taking clothes from a washing machine; a farmer plowing with a tractor; automobiles on American road and in parking lot of a defense plant. A driver with worn and dented 1938 Chevrolet Coupe car parked in front of a home is assisted by another who drives up behind him in a 1941 Oldsmobile and gives him a push. Sign at a Chevrolet service garage reading: "Official O.P.A. Tire Inspection Station." A 1942 Chevrolet 2-door fastback car drives into the garage. Mechanic greets driver and begins routine service, including: adding distilled water to battery; draining oil from car up on hydraulic lift. Scene shifts to a mechanic lubricates fittings on a 1937 Chevy on a lift at a gas station. Scene reverts to the earlier garage where mechanic drains cooling system, and refills it. The mechanic removes the carburetor and services it on a bench. He checks distributor rotor and makes compression checks. He cleans and re-gaps spark plugs, and checks tires and brakes. Film opens with map of the world showing the various theaters of operation in World War II. Narrator refers to Allies liberating town after town, as they advance. View of American troops being welcomed in a European town during an advance (probably Italy in 1944). Next, African American troops are seen boarding troop transport ships. A huge convoy of ships is seen from the air. Huge piles of war materiel on a dock. Ammunition being delivered by landing craft from the transport ship USS Hunter Liggett (APA-14) to American troops at a beachhead in the Pacific. An African American sailors directs the lowering of a piece of artillery from a ship into a landing craft. Construction equipment being used to clear the way for a new landing field. Docks, roads, and bridges being built as the Allies advance. American troops in the swamps of the South Pacific. American Army engineers clearing trees to build the Alaska Highway (ALCAN Highway) in 1942. Corps of Engineers building the Ledo Road (from India to China) during the war. The singers are seen assembled at the base of the General William Tecumseh Sherman Monument in President's Park. They have just completed a performance and begin to file out of the camera view. The American and Lithuanian flags are held by U.S. soldiers in uniform with campaign hats. They follow behind the singers as they leave.
German and Italian Air forces bomb Malta during World War II
Film begins showing explosions from bombs in Malta from high flying Axis warplanes during World War 2. They raise huge columns of smoke. Remainder of the film shows scenes of destruction wrought by the bombing that eased in 1942. A bombed out church with only skeletal roofing left. People walking on a street between rows of rubble. A horse and carriage is the only other means of transportation seen. Empty walls of a destroyed buildings with rubble filling the area between them. Views from interior of a church looking out through a huge holes in its walls. Camera pans down from rubble covered high altar in a church, to a priest conducting mass at a make shift altar. Worshipers occupy chairs set up in front of the piles of rubble. Major building with only its front wall intact. A horse and carriage conveying passengers amidst pedestrians walking between rubble lined street. Camera pans across part of city to capture explosions from more bombs.
French Air Force in World War I. Germany Army occupies Paris in World War II
Opening scene shows French Nieuport biplanes in aerial combat with German airplanes. Many are engaged in a massive dog fight. One monoplane is seen hit and falling toward the ground. Next, two French aircraft are seen returning to their base. They fly over a hangar where a crashed airplane sits with tail in the air. Near the hanger are several airplanes in various stages of maintenance. Mechanics are moving one. An airplane taxis in front of the hangar. Scene shifts to closeup of a Lafayette Escadrille Indian logo painted on a metal structure. Scene shifts to a formal award ceremony for some pilots and crews. Their squadron members are lined up behind them in front of a line of aircraft. The view is from behind a formation of French soldiers with rifles, rendering salutes. Next, French soldiers parade on the airdrome, led by a military band. At this point the scene phases out as a fireball is superimposed on a map of Europe, signifying World War 2. Adolf Hitler is seen in closeup near the Eiffel Tower, when he visits Paris, France following its occupation by German forces in 1940. Several views of German troops marching along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées and through the Arch of Triumph. Closeups of some German soldiers in the ranks. Scene shifts to North Africa, in 1942, as American troops make an unopposed amphibious landing on the coast, in Operation Torch. Several landing craft are seen and troops ashore. A Dodge 3/4 ton WC-51 army truck, with half of its hood open, makes its way through the surf as it leaves a landing craft.

Views of the United States Cruiser, USS Houston (CA-30) underway in calm seas. Closeup of her 8-inch guns in triple turrets. A large group of men march at an outdoor ceremony, intended to enlist a thousand men to make up for those lost in the sinking of the USS Houston during the battle of Battle of Sunda Strait, after the battle of Java Sea, in World War 2 (February 1942). A wooden model representing the lost ship is part of the ceremony. It contains words,"Remember the Houston," on its bow. Scene shifts to the Loew's State theater, at 1014 Main Street. A group of U.S. naval officers, in dress whites, stands on a platform in front of the theater marquee. They administer the oath of allegiance to the crowd of volunteers standing in front them, who all raise their right hands as they take the oath. Film closes with view of a Northhampton-class cruiser firing her guns.
