Manufacture of Steel at the time of World War II in the United States. Steel sheeting is run through machine rollers and cleaned specifically for use in tin plate. The sheeting is then stiffened and sheared into convenient lengths. Numerous women war workers at individual work stations of the factory, examine and stack the steel sheets. The women all wear the same type dresses and large protective gloves.
Steel production for war materiel in the United States during World War II. Worker in factory with open tilting windows. Coil of steel rod suspended by crane. Worker feeds end of steel rod into reducing die, through which it is pulled by machine power. Worker uses gauge to check diameter of emerging steel. Steel being pulled and wound as wire in spools. Barbed wire being made by a machine that twists pointed lengths of steel wire on another wire passing through the machine.
By means of special machines in a steel mill, a hot billet of solid steel is pierced and transformed into a seamless tube. Rolling reduces the thickness of the wall of the tube and increases its Length. Operator is seen as the tube is run through a reeling mill to make the wall thickness uniform.and round up the tube. View of tubing being cold drawn by machine to improve its surface, consistency and strength. Other steel products like sheets, rails strips etc are manufactured with the help of specialized equipment. People inspect the machines. Tin sheets are ready to be used.
American shipyard in operation with a number of ships in various stages of construction during World War II. Two Landing Ship Tank (LST) ships are seen, surrounded by scaffolding. Workers walking about the yard. Several ships under construction, are seen from their sterns, surrounded by scaffolding. A powered derrick stands by one ship. Running belts move in to engage roller during sheet metal rolling operations in Ford plant. The driving belt assembly disengages and the roller stops. This process is repeated several times and shown in several views.
A hot steel rod with square cross section is extruded from a machine. Underside view of actuators for devices that shake sand cores loose from newly made cast iron pipe. A worker watches parallel set of round steel rods pass under his machine. Then he cuts them, all at once, into proper length. Topside view of the machinery for loosening sand cores in newly made cast iron pipe.
