March 1960: A French ship named 'La Coubre' loaded with Belgian arms catches fire at the Havana Harbor. Fire engines arrive. Fire fighters try to put out the fire. Smoke arises due to the explosion of arms and ammunition on board. The fire fighters use water hoses as people run away from the fire. Black and white smoke shrouds the helicopter from which Castro is surveying the scene. Charred and wrecked buses. Fire fighters and civilians carry and help the wounded. Wrecked equipment and ship. A tube in the water. Ernesto Che Guevara looks on. Fidel Castro addresses Cuban sailors and civilians, blaming United States agents for blowing up the ship. A large crowd demonstrates on the streets.
1st May 1960: top officials turn out for a communist rally in Havana. Prime Minister Fidel Castro, National Bank President Ernesto Che Guevara and Cuban President Osvaldo Dorticos Torrado address the rally. They denounce the United States in their speeches. Girls with rifles. Officers, young boys and girls in the rally. People wave the Cuban flag. Soldiers on a tank. Police officers on motorcycles.
July 1960: Russian oil tanker “Peking” at dock in Havana, Cuba. Sailors stand on deck of the ship. Man looks at the Soviet ship through binocular. Car arrives and dignitaries get off. Delegation of People’s Republic of China Federation of Trade Union meet dignitaries of Cuba including President Osvaldo Dorticos Torrado. President Osvaldo and Chinese Foreign Minister Lu Jung sit with other dignitaries and discuss about sugar trade and steel import.
26th July 1960: Fidel Castro Prime Minster of Cuba calls for celebrating 7th anniversary of 26th July movement. Castro watches the rally with Osvaldo Dorticos Torrado and other dignitaries. Girls carry a star and walk in rally, holding their hands. Crowd gathers in celebration. Poster of Fidel Castro. He arrives in 1st Latin American youth conference, waves his hat and greets people. Riots break out in Algeria after Charles de Gaulle returns to power in France, and after De Gaulle dismissed from command the French paratrooper General Jacques Émile Massu for his opposition to DeGaulle's self determination plan for Muslim North Africa. French soldiers with rifles patrol at their posts and keep a vigil in Algiers during the crisis. Next scene is a flashback to May 1958: A crowd of supporters is seen around General Jacques Massu. A group of angry protestors is seen amassing, scaling a building and using a truck to break through fences onto the grounds of an official building. These scenes, the narrator indicates, are from May 5, 1958, during the May 1958 crisis, also called the Algiers putsch or the Coup of 13 May, when paratroopers under General Massu and civilians together succeeded in a coup and establishment of a "Committee of Public Safety". The narrator indicates that thus far in the 1960 crisis, the Army has remained loyal.
