Activity in European Theater of Operations during World War 2. Animated map shows Tromso, Norway. Views of British Royal Air Force attempts to sink the German Kriegsmarine battleship Tirpitz in October 1944. Shows extensive smoke cover that hides the battleship Tirpitz, preventing attack. A second attempt failed on 29 October, 1944, as smokescreen and weather clouds prevented clear bombing. During that attempt, the Tirpitz is seen firing her 15 inch guns at incoming British aircraft, while she is moored off Hakoya Island outside Tromso. She was damaged by one bomb during that attack. Later, on November 12, 1944, aerial views show British aircraft of No. 617 Squadron ("Dambusters") and No. 9 Squadron RAF bombing the Tirpitz, having caught her by surprise and without smoke screen. German Battleship Tirpitz bombed by multiple 6-ton "earthquake" bombs (or seismic bombs) dropped by British Lancaster bombers. The Tirpitz is seen as it rolls over before sinking at Tromso, Norway.
Colonel Bernt Balchen prepares to attempt rescue of the survivors of the SS Viking vessel. The vessel was rocked by explosion about eight miles off the Horse Islands. It caught fire during shooting of film The Viking. Balchen is seen consulting with two other men beside his parked Sikorsky S-38 sesquiplane amphibious aircraft named "Colonial." A man holds two rockets. The one shown on the left with the white nose is a double rocket. (These were demonstrated for the Navy at Meppen.) Flag flying over a cabin (named "Arenshorst," by Reinhard Tiling) as rocket firing trials get underway on the island of Wangerooge in the North Sea,during December 1930. Reinhard Tiling emergea from the cabin, carrying a long slender rocket . His assistant Angela Buddenboehmer, and another man (possibly Richard Tiling) follow him across the sand dunes. Two photographers are present and several other men. Tiling inserts the rocket into a launch frame already set up. The team elevates the launcher and Tiling makes some adjustment. At a signal from Tiling, Angela Buddenboehmer pushes a plunger on the ignition control box and the rocket fires and rises. Reinhard Tiling, Buddenboehmer, and Richard Tiling watch it in the sky. Several more launches are shown. Pictures of rocket projectile missiles being launched at Dummersee on April 15, 1931, and of larger missiles at later times.
Several views of preparations for the 10th test of a four nozzle (Vierstaber) rocket at Klaus Riedel's farm in Germany. Refueling the rocket. A young man standing with pieces of the rocket that exploded during the test. Change to another test, the first test of the Vierstabers rockets,on Lindwerder Island in Lake Tegel, Berlin, on July 14, 1933. The rocket set up for launch and being refueled. Lake Tegel in background. People gathered around it during refueling. Dense clouds of condensation around the rocket. The rocket is launched and rises high into the sky before falling into the lake with a splash. View of the rocket upside down in shallow waters of the lake.
