Crane in factory moves a casting and places it in position. Driving wheels are balanced, checked and tested. Workers manufacture freight and passengers cars. Workers do welding work. They melt iron for casting. They prepare molds and undergo heating and cooling work. Grinders and automatic lathes at work. A worker operates automatic machinery which compresses molten metal for railroad parts, including a large compressor forming the driving rod for a locomotive. Finally the locomotive is painted. A completed T1 locomotive, designed by Raymond Loewy, is sent to the locomotive test plant where it undergoes a test run on the dyno. Experts watch movement of the train. Instruments record the vital data for the engineers.

View of a very early historic locomotive pulling a single train car in the U.S. Narrator notes that it is from almost 100 years ago.
Railroad research and railroad network in the United States. Worker works on springs for smoother rides. He studies and tests metals and parts. Rubber gloves are immersed and water and checked. Worker undergo a goggle test. Engineer checks metals for defects using electric current. Engineers study the internal structure of the metal casting and find defects at the X-ray laboratory. Locomotive moves on track. Animated map depicts: the network of railroads spread over various countries in America.
