The hearing is called to order by Senator Daniel K. Inouye, Chairman ot the Senate Select Committee On Secret Military Assistance to Iran. Congressman Bill McCollum raises an issue regarding the relationship of the Joint Committee viz-a-viz standing committees of Congress that are interested in pursuing their own investigations. He asks Congressman Lee H. Hamilton, Chairman of the House Select Committee to Investigate Covert Arms Transactions with Iran, whether the Joint Committee needs to approve those related standing commttee activities. Chairman Hamilton expresses the opinion that standing committees do not require such approval. Mr. McCollum argues, however, citing House Resolution 12.
