A Soviet horticulturist conducts outdoor classes demonstrating how to prepare small sapling fruit trees for planting. His audience is a group of villagers in the Georgia, USSR. Trees in full flowering bloom are seen in background. The scene shifts to Tajikistan, USSR, where men work with pickaxes preparing irrigation channels and planting trees in a vast, otherwise barren region. Farmers carry sapling trees to the project and plant them in the bottom of a deep (dry) irrigation channel.
Extracting salt from Lake Lake Baskunchak in the Soviet Union (USSR)
Salt being extracted from the surface of Lake Lake Baskunchak, 270 km North of the Caspian Sea, USSR. Narrator says it is sufficient for the needs of the entire Soviet Union. View of waves rippling over salt deposits in a part of the Russian lake. A dredging-type tool spins as it grinds and extracts salt from the lake surface. A conveyer system carrying the extracted salt to rail cars. A woman inside a control shack, on a railroad car, controls the speed of the conveyer with a large wheel. Salt is seen clearly deposited on the conveyer panels as they rise. View from below, of the control shack and water being discharged back into the lake from a pipe. View of the conveyer, mounted on its rail car, emptying salt into a train of open rail cars on a parallel set of tracks. At the same time water flows from its discharge pipe, on the opposite side, back into the lake. Finally, a locomotive is seen pulling rail cars filled with salt.
Opening of fountains at Peterhof (Petrodvorets) on August 25, 1946, after their restoration from destruction in World War II
Film opens showing devastated snow-covered remains of Peterhof Palace and its fountains, in Leningrad, after the Russians ended the siege of that city in January, 1944 of World War II. The next scenes show crowds gathered on 25 August, 1946, to celebrate the newly restored fountains, which are seen spraying water again. (Narrator notes that Russians now call the place Petrodvorets, meaning Peter's Palace.) An official speaks, at the ceremony, about the architecture of Petrodvorets and its cultural masterpieces still to be restored. Glimpse of statuary and array of fountains. Closeup of several young women holding flowers. Another shot of the fountains spraying along both sides of a central pond, with spectators crowded along the extreme sides near lines of trees.
