A large wooden replica of the Iron Cross medal is set up outdoors, where persons may drive nails into it, to mark their contributions of from one to five marks to the Red Cross, during World War 1. An older man in military uniform taps several nails into the top of the cross. Visiting American, Jane Addams, co-founder of Hull House, in Chicago, and President of the newly formed Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) stands nearby observing, as the man sets a nail into position at the center of the cross. He then lifts a small boy up, so he can finish hammering it in.
Opening slate, in Swedish, states: "Röda Korset anordnar öfverallt bespisning en middag kostar det 10 pfennige." (The Red Cross organizes all-inclusive dining a dinner costs 10 pfennige.) A variety of persons, from all walks of life, are seen at an outdoor dining facility. They line up for a meal provided by the Red Cross. A woman dressed in white directs persons to the food line. Another, gives the people utensils as they carry their plates of food to tables. View of chefs serving food to persons in the line. Numerous views of these activities as more persons come into the facility. View from back away show many persons seated at tables eating, and several women in white dresses near empty tables in the background. Men are seen carrying large panels (ostensibly pertaining to an ambulatory hospital) from a house among trees. Next is a brief glimpse of Red Cross women preparing food in an urban setting. A Berlin policeman stands nearby, watching them. Some persons are seen seated at tables in the background.
Opening slate reads,”Deutschwehr Berlin I.” (German Army Berlin I) Men in civilian clothes, but wearing German Army caps, stand behind a line of food set out in a courtyard in Berlin. Several women fill bowls of soup from a cauldron, and offer them to boys and young men, forming a line. The women, and some of the youth, wear white armbands reading “DeutschWehr.” Camera focuses on recipients balancing their soup bowls as they pass through the line. A corpulent German Army officer appears briefly behind the food line.
