Astronaut Shepard climbs into the helicopter. The cheering crew welcomes astronaut Shepard on the carrier U.S. Navy ship USS Lake Champlain (CV-39) after his successful trip. Following a medical checkup, Shepard and his family is received by the President of the United States John F Kennedy at the White House. Shepard addresses the dignitaries present on the White House grounds, and the assembled clap when he finishes speaking. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy can be seen saying and then repeating to the President, "Pin the medal on him" (perhaps the President had forgotten but was reminded by Mrs. Kennedy). President Kennedy then pins the NASA Distinguished Service Medal on the jacket of astronaut Shepard. Civilians greet astronaut Shepard as he passes in a parade to the Pennsylvania Avenue.
