Some of the guests, including Thomas Edison, pose informally for a picture. The smallest man, at right of the group is Dr. F.E. Ives, inventor of the trichromatic camera. To his right is W.G. U.S. Maine-class battleship fires salute during Naval Review. U.S. Marines practice signalling aboard a warship
Opening scenes show Maine-Class battleship underway, during a Naval Review in New York on October 14, 1912. The battleship is flying a huge American flag from her bow and a smaller one and a naval jack from her towers, plus a stream of nautical signal flags. She is firing a broadside salute as she passes the Yacht, USS Mayflower, which is flying the Presidential flag, indicating President Taft is aboard. Complete change of sequence shifts to U.S. Marines performing calisthenics on deck of a warship, as officers monitor them. Later, marines practice signalling on deck. One marine signals with a flag, as three others set up tripods with mirror signaling devices and proceed to transmit messages.
Demonstrators fill streets in Manhattan, expressing anger over unemployment and lack of public assistance during the Depression
Huge crowd of people fills New York City street during the Great Depression, in 1930. Some carry signs reflecting economic woes. One reads:"$25.00 a week for UNEMPLOYED."Others read: "No work, No rent;" "Down with Vagrancy Laws;" and "Join Unemployees Council." Scene shifts to Police arriving and arresting a woman and a man whom they escort into a Paddy Wagon. Police advance toward group of demonstrators, outside City Hall, holding signs. One reads: "Vote Communist." Another reads: "Food and Clothing for Unemployed," and one reads:"Fight the Speed UP SYSTEM." One reads: "We demand unemployment insurance."Several women are in the group, which retreats as the police move toward them. One man is lifted by others, above the group, in front of an entrance to the City Court. He stands on rung of an iron fence by the sidewalk. Defiant demonstrators exchange words with police officer. More signs are seen reading: "Down with Fake Employment Agencies" and "Down with Police Brutality." The crowd moves along, some taunting the policemen as they pass. A phalanx of several policemen press against the demonstrators. A woman, with a sign, falls to the ground and another helps her up. Scene shifts to an intersection of Manhattan streets, completely blocked in all directions by cars and demonstrators.

Professor David Gottlieb introduces Ernest Green who steps to a classroom podium to speak to Michigan State students in a lecture room. Green carrying books is seen entering and sitting down in the Michigan State library. In another scene, he enters sociological data into Hollerith punch cards for processing by computer. He walks in the university computer room where tape decks are seen spinning and computer operators are at work. One of the tapes mounted on a drive is labeled: "Ernest Green, Aspirations." Results from his work are seen coming out of a line printer. Green sits in a library and opens the 1960 yearbook of Central High School containing his and Carlotta Walls 'entries. View of Carlotta, in dorm at Denver University, Colorado, where she is a student. Gloria Ray is seen at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where she is a senior majoring in chemistry. Terrence Roberts is seen at the City College of Los Angeles, where he is studying Business Administration. Melba Pattillo, who left college to marry, is seen in two views. Scene shifts back to Central High and Jefferson Thomas, looking at the athletic trophies on display. He (who is narrating this film) states that he will take an exam in Spring to become a Certified Public Accountant. He walks down steps of Central High and camera pans over neighborhood to the State Capitol dome in distance. (Civil rights movement era.)
