Immigrants from Europe, arriving from 1880 to 1914, participate in the working life of America.
Two new immigrant man are seen on bunks in a tenement in New York City, where the narrator says nine out of ten immigrants arrived in the period from 1880 to 1914. Two women pose, sitting beside a sleeping child in a tenement. An immigrant speaks about the hardship of arriving in a strange land where he did not speak the language and felt "lost." He says he gradually overcame that by going to night school to learn a little English and to read and write. He says he made a nice living as a peddler, and expressed appreciation for the opportunities America gave to immigrants. Scenes shot on a Wednesday afternoon in the South Bronx, New York City. View from car driving slowly uphill on Eagle Avenue heading towards 149th Street in the South Bronx, New York City. Among cars parked at the left side of a one-way street, is a 1957 Chevy that has been stripped of its tires and wheels. Apartment buildings line the street. Residents are out and about walking on the sidewalks. One man has the hood up on his big-fin 1960 Plymouth Fury automobile. Closeups as the camera car drives past some residents. Closed business establishments have heavy steel gates locked across their doors and windows. A sign advertising Ballantine beer is mounted on a building. Below it someone has painted message with partial words:"...Jtch Unknown Sinners." Small glass blocks have been broken out of an adjoining building. Camera pans down an apartment building on Crimmins Avenue, following path of external fire escape ladders. A number of people are gathered socially on the apartment house steps. A group of mixed age men play a game of stick ball in the street. A car turns into the street hugging the left side of the road to avoid interfering with the ballgame. Closeups of some players, as one (unseen) is recorded speaking about the game. (The narrator notes that this is filmed on a Wednesday afternoon in the middle of a "work week.") Clear aerial views of midtown and lower Manhattan, New York City 1930, but with smoke coming from Hudson River pier of New York Harbor where the North German Lloyd liner Munchen (sometimes Muenchen or München) is seen on fire, shortly after docking in New York after the voyage from Bremen, Germany. Ship emits smoke and fire at the pier. Firefighters spray water to extinguish fire. Views of the piers and slips and dock areas on the Hudson River at New York City and close up views of the firefighters battling the blaze on the Muenchen. The ship subsequently sank at dock. She was raised later in 1930, repaired in dry dock, and returned to service under the new name SS General von Steuben. The ship was sunk in 1945 by the S-13 submarine of the Soviet Union.
