Tethered tests of the U.S. Army Air Corps XR-1 helicopter at the Platt-LePage company factory in Eddystone Pennsylvania. The helicopter parked in front of hangar. Pilot Lou Leavitt in the cockpit and starts the engine. Several men watch and take pictures of the action. A group of men including Platt,Leavitt ,Le Page and Grover Loening talk to each other. XR-1 hovers as cars and trucks remain parked in the background. Several scenes in which the the helicopter lightly touches down and then takes off again.
An assault of U.S. 6th Marine Division on Northern tip of Okinawa. Marines advance slowly along rocky edges of hill. They observe hill in the background which is shelled. Smoke rises from the shells exploding on the hill. Marines in heavy underbrush with machine gun fire towards hill in the background. (World War II period).
U.S. 29th Marine Regiment, 6th Division, in combat with Japanese on Northern tip of Okinawa. U.S. plane and Japanese plane in dog fight. American plane shoots Japanese plane. Japanese plane starts to come down in flames and crashes into hillside. Marines with weapons slung over shoulders as they go over rough terrain. Demolished Japanese plane crashed. Flames come out of it and Marines examine the same. Dead body of Japanese pilot lying on ground. (World War II period).
U.S. Marines, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Regiment, 6th Division raise flag on Northern tip of Okinawa. Marine officer in fatigues makes a speech in microphone held by another Marine during flag raising ceremony. Other Marines stand around in the background. Officer has pistol with shoulder holster on. Honor Guard in fatigues and helmets come to present arms with weapons as flag is about to be raised. Bugle in the foreground sounding Colors. Marines salute flag as the flag flies on pole. Marines look up at the flag flying on pole.
A dramatic roadway viaduct somewhere in Northern Italy. It is of steel and concrete construction with integral arches, and soars above a deep valley in which a river flows. The center portion of the bridge is gone, due to Allied bombing in World War 2. Camera pans over the viaduct from surrounding high terrain. (May be associated with a river named Olio, or perhaps, Oglio.)
Remains of United States Army Air Forces B-29 Superfortress that crashed in Tinian, Northern Marianas Islands during World War 2. It was B-29 number 42-65283, nicknamed "Big Wheel," from the 9th Bomb Group, 99th Bomb Squadron. Opening scene shows remains of two engines and bent propellers from the crashed B-29. Ocean and a B-29 coming in for a landing are seen in background. Two destroyed engines and props along with partially intact empennage, are the only recognizable parts of the airplane. Aircraft debris is scattered close to the beach. Three U.S. Army Air Force personnel stand looking over the wreckage.
