About 25 cyclists gather loosely at starting point of race, on stone street with trolley tracks in it. They ride downhill on a concrete highway, escorted by motorcycle police and several automobiles. At the finish line in the city, spectators line both sides of the course, set along edge of a main street. A trolley car sits in center of street, and cars fill the opposite lane from the race. (The cars have no rear license plates.) The motorcycle police lead two finalists to the finish line, racing neck-to-neck. A trophy is presented to the winner.

Republican Governor Mark O Hatfield of Oregon gives a preview of his keynote speech, which describes the party as one of faith in various American ideals.
