Activities of the United States soldiers in Europe during World War I. United States Army soldiers depart from a troop ship at a French port. They are seen marching in a French town. Houses along the side of a street in the town. Trees along the other side of the street. A band marching on the street.
President of the Provisional Government of the French Republic Charles de Gaulle makes inspection trip through the country at end of World War 2. Crowds line the sidewalks waving French flags. A Free-French tank named: "L'Audacieux." Numerous destroyed and damaged buildings and rubble lining the streets where his motorcade proceeds. At one stop, he is greeted by an honor guard of Colonial troops. His motorcade passes through a section of the Maginot line where rows of anti-tank dragon's teeth appear intact. At entry of one town a welcoming banner across the road reads: "Soyez Les Bienvenus." De Gaulle steps from a car near a sidewalk filled with French school girls, accompanied by Nuns, in habit. He shakes hands with some girls dressed in traditional local costumes. More views of destruction and rubble. Only the street is clear and rubble lines the edges. Armored cars and other armor pass through twin gates of a city and proceed down a main street, followed by marching French infantry, as people watch and cheer from sidewalks. A Cadillac automobile carries De Gaulle to a French Naval marina. Sailors present arms and he proceeds down a ramp to a floating dock, where he boards a motor launch that takes him along a river. More scenes of cheering French crowds.
World War One British Tank crew wearing protective leather helmets enter Mark I Male Tank through access door adjacent to sponson. Officer, carrying his black cat mascot on his shoulder, follows. Tank's sponson (also called barbette) is seen rotating with its 6 pounder gun changing elevation.
A U.S. Army officer gives instructions to an African American soldier who salutes him by presenting arms. American soldiers chat as they guard German prisoners. American soldiers converse as they look over World War 1 battlefield charts.
British Royal Engineers troops march to a project site, carrying picks and shovels. Next, they are seen digging a straight ditch following a course laid out by taut string. Sections of pipe are laid on the ground next to them. A large Army truck and an ambulance with red cross markings is seen near a large group of the soldiers. At least one injured is being carried shoulder-high by litter bearers. Several officers appear to be checking plans for the project. As the soldiers mill about, they look up towards the sky, as if noting airplanes above (unseen). The troops continue work on the project, which now appears to involve setting up fortifications. One soldier leaves walking a bicycle. Another view shows the area to be quite rocky, and a large pile of rocks has been used as part of the fortifications. Several ambulatory wounded German prisoners are seen walking toward the rear, as they are passed by a contingent of mounted cavalry headed toward the front (World War I; World War 1; WWI; WW1)
American and French soldiers return to camp after armistice brings end to fighting in World War I. Soldiers return to camps from the battle field. Soldiers gather and cheer. American and French forces hug and shake hands at the end of the war. U.S. Army troops exchange caps with the French soldiers. Soldiers hold each other in celebration. Soldiers smile and dance together. Soldiers play music and dance at the celebration.
