Destroyer Escort,USS Frament (DE 677) is commissioned during World War 2. Lieutenant Commander S. T. McAdam, Jr., in command, reads his orders to crew assembled on deck. Tug boats move the ship away from the pier. DE-677 underway in shakedown cruise.Officers review daily plans for shakedown cruise. General Quarters alarm is sounded and crew mans battle stations. Gun crews at 1.1 inch, 40mm, and 3 inch guns. Crew members positioned to launch depth charges ("ash cans") , torpedoes, and to fire "hedge hogs" (clusters of bombs). Navy aircraft tows a canvas sleeve target for crew to practice fire against. Antiaircraft gun crews shoot down target.
General Jean De Lattre De Tassigny speaks about relations with Indochina. The French General gives a brief speech in English. He states that the French are fighting against the Communists for democracy and for the freedom of the world.
Opens with slate that says 'Crossing the Line'. Depicts King Neptune shellback initiation ceremony aboard USS Idaho in the Atlantic Ocean en route to Rio de Janeiro. Slate indicates that President Elect of Brazil de Pessoa was on board. Sailors lie down on the ship deck. The captain welcomes King Neptune's messengers aboard the ship. They inform the captain that King Neptune will visit his ship. King Neptune and Queen Amphitrite are welcomed aboard the ship by the captain. The ship's officers are introduced to the Royal visitors. Queen Amphitrite meets old friends. The Court of King Neptune with sailors dressed in various costumes. The Royal barber shaves and cleans each sailor. The sailors are immersed in Neptune's salty water. View of a certificate awarded to a sailor following his successful initiation.
Italian aviator, General Francesco de Pinedo, attempts takeoff in his Bellanca airplane, named the Santa Lucia. The Italian flag is painted on the aircraft rudder. The ship is heavily laden with fuel for a solo long-distance flight from Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, New York, to Baghdad, Iraq. The aircraft is seen to wander during the takeoff roll and with loss of control, crashes near a fence alongside the runway. The aircraft breaks into pieces, and with one wing sticking straight up in the air, begins to burn. It is immediately consumed in fire. Vehicles rush to the scene. Hangar number 6, at Floyd Bennett field, can be seen in background, with "Erickson and Remmert, Inc." painted on it. De Pinedo died in the accident.
