USS Foss explodes and breaks into two after being torpedoed in a live fire test.

Aerial views from a hovering helicopter, of the U.S. Destroyer Escort, USS Foss (DE-59) as is floats unmanned as a target in live fire test of a new proximity fuse for the Mk 16 torpedo. A huge explosion is seen as the torpedo, launched by the U.S. Submarine, USS Sabalo (SS-302) strikes the Foss amidship. The Foss breaks into two pieces, which float separately, until they begin to sink slowly. The bow, displaying the number 59 points almost straight up as it begins to sink.
