Major Robert Morgan (well-known as the pilot of the B-17, "Memphis Belle," first to complete 25 missions over Germany, in the European Theater and now a B-29 Aircraft Commander with the 73rd Bomb Wing) briefs his crew. They sit on the tarmac near their aircraft, the B-29, "Dauntless Dotty," which was lead aircraft on the first B-29 bombing mission over Japan, on November 24, 1944. The Crew enters the aircraft after the briefing. (World War II period).
Film opens showing a Japanese Nakajima B5N (Kate) torpedo bomber flying low over the water through hail of bullets fired from Allied ships, during World War 2. Glimpse of the plane flying past a U.S. Iowa class Battleship. Next, it flies past a U.S.New Orleans Class Cruiser. As it continues flight, away from the camera, a U.S. Mahan class destroyer appears from the left. Flak puffs of black smoke are in the air. Scene shifts to smoke rising from a bombed ship in the distant background. Change of scene shows a U.S. Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless aircraft recovering on an aircraft carrier.
The USS Randolph (CV-15) hit by a Japanese Yokosuka P1Y " Frances", twin-engine kamikaze bomber, on her starboard side,aft, just below the flight deck, as she was anchored at Ulithi, during World War 2. Flames appear in the dark aboard the carrier as firefighters work in the area under searchlights. Later scene shows crew members silhouetted against orange flames as they fight the fire. It appears to come under control, but several small explosions propel burning objects aloft, and flames continue to break out. (Note: 25 crew were killed and 106 wounded during this incident.)
