During World War 1, a French naval aviator climbs into the hull of a Franco-British Aviation Type H flying boat, marked F.B.A. #8. Another crew member is already aboard and the engine is running. They taxi out in the water and take off in the aircraft. As they taxi for takeoff, a Breguet 14H float plane lands in background. Aerial views from the airborne F.B.A. Type H, showing boats in the water below. Next are seen two voisin 3 float planes taxiing slowly in water. A Viosin 3 float plane taxis rapidly up onto a wooden ramp. (WWI. WW1)
French soldiers unroll the fabric of an observation balloon in a clearing in a wood, during World War 1. They stretch it out flat in all directions. Scene shifts to a soldier sitting in a depot surrounded by stacks of compressed gas cylinders. He connects a cylinder to a fabric duct directing gas to the balloon. Soldiers monitor and adjust the balloon fabric as it expands. The next scene shows many soldiers surrounding the balloon as it expands to almost full size. They hold tether lines to keep the balloon from escaping, as they walk it to a launching location. Next sequence shows the balloon rising with observers in two separate gondolas suspended below the gas bag. View from one of the gondolas, looking toward the ground. (WWI. WW1)
View from above of a French military officer observer in the gondola of a tethered balloon. French soldiers on the ground control a reel of telephone wire connecting to the observer, aloft. Scene shifts to the observer, again, who bends over a chart of the area On the ground, French officers communicate by phone to the observer and make notes about his observations.
French troops in trenches on lookout for enemy aircraft. They fire an elevated machine gun (Mitrailleuse) mounted on a fixed pedestal, at an ememy airplane. View of an antiaircraft machine gun hidden in a deep hole. Observation balloon being lowered to a landing site with assistance of many French troops on the ground. Basket carrying observers is seen. (World War 1. WWI. WW1)
A French observation balloon aloft high in the sky near the front during World War 1. Suddenly the observer bails out of the gondola and parachutes to earth (presumably due to threat from German aircraft, that is not seen in the sequence). (WWI. WW1)
French troops taking a break on the Western Front during World War I. They are in a deep trench. Many smoke cigarettes. One plays a flute. Some share food. Scene shifts to a deep dugout with substantial structure, where several soldiers relax. Another scene shows several rifles arranged in a group at edge of a trench and French soldiers afixing grenades to their barrels and firing them. French soldiers in a deep trench behind sand bags. Officer reads a dispatch brought to him by a courier.
