Wholesale reconstruction of the White House begun in 1949 and continuing during most of the term of President Truman, who used Blair house as the official Presidential residence, during that period. Although the wings continued to function, with White House staff, the main house was completely rebuilt, with new supports, beams, etc.which involved demolition and rebuilding on a monumental scale.
