American "Indian Love Story" translated into Indian sign language by Richard Sanderville
A story called,"Indian Love Story," is written out in chalk, on a blackboard. Scene shifts to Richard "Dick" Benedict Sanderville, interpreter at the Blackfeet Agency in Browning, Montana,seated on a chair,outdoors. He translates the story into Native American Indian sign language, as follows, while the camera records his movements: Man asks chief 's Daughter Will You Marry Me? She Says No. You're too Poor. Man Is Sad. Goes To War. Kills Two Sioux. Steals Ten Horses And Two Guns. Man Returns After Ten Days. Asks Woman Will You Marry Me? She Says-Yes! Man Says-No!! You Don't Love Me-You Love My Horses'. The signs: 1. MAN ASK CHIEF HIGH (head-chief) CHILD WOMAN , YOU ME MARRY; which translates to: A man asks the head-chief's daughter: "Will you marry me?" 2. WOMAN SAY , NO YOU POOR; which translates to her saying: "No, you are too poor." 3. MAN SAD (heart heavy), GO-TO-WAR; which translates to: The man is sad (his heart is heavy, falls on the ground). He goes to war. 4. KILL TWO SIOUX (3 missing sign), STEAL TEN HORSE, TWO BOW; which translates to: He kills two Sioux, steals ten horses and two bows. 5. GO-TO-WAR COME TEN NIGHT; which means: The man returns (from war) after ten days. 6. SEE WOMAN, SAY YOU ME MARRY; which means: He (visits and) asks the woman: "Will you marry me?" 7. WOMAN YES, MAN SAY NO; which translates to her saying: "Yes!" The man says: "No!" 8. YOU FOND HORSE , YOU HEART FOND (love) FINISHED. Translation: You love (my) horses, ( I ) don't love you anymore. Editor Commentary: The second GO-TO-WAR sign is much shorter because it is part of a compound sign, and the emphasis is now on COME. The actual going to war has already happened. Also, in the last sentence the first YOU is the subject, but the second YOU is the object, and the subject is missing. Finally, in the first sentence the HIGH sign (index finger pointing up above head) is almost unnoticeable, and means "standing high above all others" or "above all, superior, high above the others".

Growth of suburban areas caused by development of the automobile and the public road system (1897-1927). A 1920's automobile departs the driveway of a home and is driven on a developed road leading toward a city. Next scene is a mid 1920's aerial view of the Westside Waterfront on the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, flying in a northward direction. Buildings, roads, and port shipping operations are visible. A sign for Powers Furniture is seen further inland from the air. Near end of aerial view a large sign is visible on a warehouse for Preferred Stock Canned Goods by Allen & Lewis, and just north of it is seen a building of the Gillen-Cole Company, as the view continues looking north toward the Steel Bridge. Next scene is a car parked beside a home. A woman exits the car and enters the house. A working man bids farewell to his wife as she stands on a house door step. He gets in his car to leave for work. Workers and cars arriving outside a factory building.

Post-World War 1 United States marked by labor-management strife and strikes, especially in the garment industry. Clothing workers are seen busy at their jobs in a factory in New York City. A man is seen symbolically closing and locking a steel door (narrative refers to a company "lockout.") Footage of police officers and crowd of laborers on New York City street. Police try to maintain order as crowds fill garment district streets in protest. Montage of persons awaiting a June 1921 decision by the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Kings County. Narrator announces that Justice James C. Van Siclen, has granted an injunction (against all picketing by the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America). Narrator quotes Van Siclen's opening statement in the decision: "The court must stand at all times as the representative of capital, of the captains of industry..." View of Sidney Hillman, leader of the Amalgamated union (ACWA) sitting with other union members. View of a bustling New York City street lined with tenements and pushcarts in the lower east side of Manhattan. A man washing his face at a sink. A woman preparing a meal over a stove.
