Baseball players train in northern U.S. states during World War II, 1943
Newsreel clip entitled "Ball Players Train in North" shows major league baseball teams holding spring training in 1943. Teams were not allowed to travel south to Florida because of World War 2 travel restrictions. First part of clip shows men (presumably baseball players) riding in a horse and buggy along a tree-lined road. Allied invasion of Sicily, Italy during World War II. U.S. Army Lieutenant General George S. Patton, Commander of the U.S. Seventh Army, along with a soldier aboard a troop ship. Soldiers mark a sheet. Lt. Gen. Patton with a cigar in his mouth as he goes over the side of the ship. He climbs down a rope net into a landing craft. Lt. Gen. Patton seated aboard the landing craft, accompanied by several armed soldiers and officers, including a Brigadier General, as it approaches a beach in the Gulf of Gela, South-Central Sicily. A captain and soldier help Lt. General Patton to get off the landing craft. Patton and officers, including the Brigadier General who accompanied him on the landing craft, stand together on the beach. Film opens with map showing lower France and Mediterranean areas. However, it shows images covering primarily the French Riviera (or Côte d'Azur) under German occupation during World War II, in 1943 or 1944. German infantry march along a road. A flight of German FW-190 Fighter airplanes flies inland from the Mediterranean Sea and crosses low above a harbor. Change of scene shows a single fighter plane buzzing the Marseille Port. (It looks like a P-47 with invasion stripes. But It does not draw any anti-aircraft fire.) Camera tracks it from vantage point at the Marseille Basilica, high above the harbor.
