Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin is given a welcome ceremony in Moscow, after he became the first human to voyage into outer space. From a Russian newsreel with English narration, created during the "Space Race" between the United States and the Soviet Union. Yuri Gagarin arrives by an Aeroflot plane (CCCP-757) at a Moscow airfield. Premier of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev, greets Gagarin. A huge crowd holds pictures and banners of Gagarin and Khrushchev. Gagarin reports to Premier Khrushchev that he has fulfilled his mission and feels well and ready for his next assignment. Gagarin greets his wife, Valentina Gagarina. He moves in a car through crowd filled streets. At a ceremony in the Kremlin Premier Khrushchev and Defense Minister Marshal of the Soviet Union Rodion Malinovsky congratulate Gagarin and award him the title "Hero of the Soviet Union".
Signing of a twenty year Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance between the Soviet Union and Romanian Peoples Republic. Dr. Petru Groza, signs for the Romanian Peoples Republic, making Romania the first People's Republic to sign such an agreement with the Soviet Union. Among those present are: Soviet dictator, Joseph Stalin, Soviet foreign minister Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Molotov, Romanian foreign minister Ana Pauker, Romanian Communist leader Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej, and Joseph Stalin, General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union's Central Committee. The official keeps a pen in a stand. The dignitaries move out of the room.

He begins his remarks by saying: "Ladies and gentleman, friends, as we celebrate the New Year, I am glad to address the citizens of the United States of America and to convey to you season's greetings and best wishes from all Soviet people." He speaks of the improving interactions and relations between "our two peoples." Among other things, he states: "Human life is equally priceless, whether in the Soviet Union, the United States, or in any other country. So, let us spare no effort to affirm peace on Earth. He finishes by saying: "In concluding this New Year address to the people of the United States of America, I wish peace, happiness, and joy to every American family. A happy New Year to all of you."
