In preparation for the World War 2 Atlantic Conference, crews of the British Battleship, HMS Prince of Wales and the U.S. Heavy Cruiser, USS Augusta, prepare a gangway connecting the two ships. British Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill is seen pacing the deck of the Prince of Wales, as the crews are at work. A cat is seen on deck. Several individuals pass over the gangplank. Later, President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill are seen seated on deck of the USS Augusta, as members of their respective parties mingle and converse. Sailors from the USS Augusta mingle with British sailors aboard HMS Prince of Wales.
U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt at his home, Springwood, in Hyde Park, New York. The President is seated at a desk in his study, as he examines postage stamps in his collection. He has several books of stamps and examines them with the aid of a magnifying glass.
Uniformed guards unload cartons containing lottery numbers of men registered for the draft under the Selective Service Act of 1940. They bring them into the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium at 14th Street and Constitution Avenue in Washington DC. Inside the auditorium, they empty capsules, containing the numbers, into a large glass container, under the supervision of U.S. Government civilian officials. Numerous American Legion members in uniform also assist.
United States navy fighting the Japanese. Map locates places where General MacArthur has visited. General on the deck of ship accompanied by other officials. He smokes cigar. The Navy bombards Japanese positions on Leyte. Landing craft reach the beaches. General MacArthur and President Osmena wade ashore. United States troops advance on the island. Destroyed buildings in the area due to bombardment. Civilians in tents. U.S. troops along with MacArthur and other officials stand outside a building and the flag hoisting ceremony takes place. American soldiers gather informally,at side of a hill as one (likely an Army Chaplain) reads from a bible, as he leans over a fallen soldier, partially covered with a tarpaulin.
