U.S. 101st Airborne Division in England during World War 2. Paratroopers marching on Welford airfield, Berkshire, England, then home of the U.S. 435th Troop Carrier Group. They march past gliders parked with their rear doors open. Tail of a WACO CG-4A Glider is seen with serial number 277396. A band plays. An olive drab staff car arrives on the airfield. U.S. Army General Dwight D Eisenhower and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill alight from the car. At start, the film shows a formation of American C-47 transport aircraft with paratroopers starting to jump from them during World War 2. Viewed moments later from the ground, the sky is filled with trooper' open chutes, descending. An animated map shows Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany. It shows location of the Allied paratroopers drop in Holland, intended to spearhead a drive around the Main River into Germany. The map then shows German forces encircling the paratroopers and the Second British Army heading North to the rescue. Next, a huge number of American Soldiers are seen assembled out of doors in England. Closeup of General Dwight D. Eisenhower speaking in a microphone to the assembly. Closeups of soldiers including some who are American Army Air Corps pilots, and other aircrew members, mostly Lieutenants. Senior Paratrooper officers stand at attention in front of formation of troopers with American flag beside them.(Narrator says these were the men who made up the "lost division," heroes who fought alone for seven terrible days.) Plywood used to make crafts, boats and airplanes for the Invasion of Normandy during World War 2
Plywood used to make war material for the Invasion of Normandy. Birch, maple and mahogany logs are boiled for 24 hours. The logs are rounded on rollers and then peeled into long sheets of veneer. Women war production workers take out thin sheets of wood made from the logs. The sheets are then put into drying ovens to reduce the moisture. Women make an alternating wood and glue pile. These are stacked and put into a machine press to make the finished plywood. Workers put together and weld the prepared plywood. The plywood is used to make landing crafts, boats, pontoons, army holding boards, gliders and fighter planes. Men construct boats and crafts. A glider takes off. Worker under the plane.
