U.S. Navy aviators stand and walk about at the edge of the flight deck on the Navy's first aircraft carrier USS Langley (CV-1) in United States. Visibility is somewhat obscured by mist. They move to the area where sailors are standing slightly below the flight deck. All seem to be awaiting something. Suddenly, the sailors and aviators move up on the deck. One holds a megaphone. Others hold flags. Two officers in white caps converse with an aviator wearing a leather helmet. View from behind the men as they look expectantly out from the ship. Captain and another navy officer, both in whites, look out together. A Vought VE-7 aircraft approaches to land. It's tail hook is clearly seen extended as it passes the camera. But the aircraft had rounded out too high and the hook failed to snag any arresting barriers. It continues on, noses over and somersaults off the end of the flight deck and into the water. Next, an Aeromarine 39b approaches and the pilot loses control as it passes over the start of the flight deck. His right wing dips and contacts the flight deck and he crashes. The pilot is seen in the open cockpit and does not appear to be injured. Deck crewmen run to help the pilot.

Opening scenes show Maine-Class battleship underway, during a Naval Review in New York on October 14, 1912. The battleship is flying a huge American flag from her bow and a smaller one and a naval jack from her towers, plus a stream of nautical signal flags. She is firing a broadside salute as she passes the Yacht, USS Mayflower, which is flying the Presidential flag, indicating President Taft is aboard. Complete change of sequence shifts to U.S. Marines performing calisthenics on deck of a warship, as officers monitor them. Later, marines practice signalling on deck. One marine signals with a flag, as three others set up tripods with mirror signaling devices and proceed to transmit messages.

(The "Memphis Belle" was the first B-17 to complete 25 daylight bombing missions over Germany, with aircraft and crew intact.) Morgan, pilot of the aircraft, stands at attention in front of his crew. The "Memphis Belle" name and artwork is seen on the nose of the B-17, as well as part of the 25 bombs and 8 swastikas painted on its fuselage, indicating missions flown and German aircraft shot down. General Devers congratulates the crew and shakes hands with Captain Morgan. This is repeated for the camera. (The "Memphis Bell was flown back to the U.S by a select crew, including Captain Morgan, and took part in War Bond drives to support the war effort.)
