Recruits are seen exiting a building at the Great Lakes Training Center in World War 2. They are dressed in newly issued work uniforms and each carries his other issued gear in a large duffel bag. They load their duffel bags into an open stake truck, and gather together in front of the building. A Petty Officer Second Class steps from the building and begins placing them into formation and marching them loosely toward their barracks. A company of other recruits in white uniforms is practicing close-order drill nearby. At the barracks, the Petty Officer briefs them about Navy living, including smoking rules, sick call, how to salute, and other things.

Others with pails and cleaning materials on the barracks porch and cleaning the barracks latrine. The barracks members are seen lined up for inspection, which is announced by a bugler. A Lieutenant, Junior Grade, is escorted through the barracks and salutes the barracks chief as he leaves. Next, an honor guard of recruits, in whites, and shouldered arms, raise a rooster flag, outside their barracks, indicating a successful inspection. Recruits are seen engaged in their turn at cleaning shared entities, such as the mess and cooking facilities and staffing them during so-called Service Week.
