Opening scene shows large numbers of U.S. Army soldiers taken prisoners in the final German counter offensive of World War 2, known as the Battle of the Ardennes or Battle of the Bulge. German photographer concentrates on African American soldiers in the group, with closeups of many, juxtaposing them with closeups of German soldiers. A German Panzer IV tank passes a hillside where many American prisoners are seated on the ground. A horse-drawn wagon and a Panzer III tank pass the hillside, and then the American prisoners are herded, under guard toward the road below. Scene shifts to German soldiers sharing captured American foods and cigarettes. Several German soldiers in camouflage uniforms. One carries an M34 machine gun with a circular magazine. At start of film, German infantry and supplies are seen moving in large barges, along a river in Germany, during World War 2. Closeups of the troops looking tired and bored. Many of them are sleeping on the barges. Closeups of several asleep. Scene changes showing troops on the camera barge waving at another passing barge carrying some soldiers and many containers of war materiel and supplies. Connected to it's stern is a small barge carrying several horses and two soldiers. View of troops disembarking from a barge and stepping onto a dock, each carrying their personal small arms and equipment. Complete change of scene shows a small boy grooming a horse. A log cabin, trees, and a body of water are in the near background. A youthful cavalryman approaches the boy and gives him a dispatch to be carried. They exchange old-fashioned hand salutes.
