Japan mobilizing for war
Scenes from 1930s during lead up to Second Sino-Japanese War, and World War 2. Narration by General of the Imperial Japanese Army Baron Sadao Araki. Japanese military airpower in early 1930s
Animated cartoon shows a Japanese soldier loading and firing an artillery field piece. The shell travels over a distant hill and explodes. Next scene shows large gathering of people with banners at a military airfield where aircraft and anti-aircraft equipment and guns are on display. A factory is at the edge of the field and its smoke stack is emitting dark black smoke. Viewed from beside parked Nakajima Army Type 91 Fighter plane, is seen some sort of table set up in the middle of the field. A photographer is taking a picture of it. Camera moves to tail of the airplane revealing an anti-aircraft search light parked next to it. Glimpse of Japanese red ball roundel painted on side of the airplane. General Sadao Araki, Minister of War, standing by a table, near a microphone, is given a rolled document. He presents it to a robed priest. Japanese films show school activities to explain the school system and its deficiencies. The films emphasize the role of schools in developing nationalism, Japan. A school program for parents: Two girls play musical numbers on koto (2nd popular musical instrument in Japan) in a program. Young Japanese perform play to entertain the audience of parents. Audience gives huge round of applause. Banzai cheers on stage. Teacher is in black uniform and students are in native kimonos. Teacher teaches students to rock the babies when they cry. Students are told to bring infants or their young brother and sister to learn care of baby. Students learn to make babies sleep and take care of them. Babies are rocked to sleep in a poor school.
Battle for Palembang oil refineries in Indonesia, during World War II
Battle of Palembang, Indonesia, in World War 2. Japanese Kawasaki Ki-56 transport aircraft flying overhead in formation, begin dropping paratroopers. The sky is filled with their chutes. Next scene shows many struggling to make their way through knee-deep swampy jungles, where they landed. Most of their arms and ammunition were lost in the swamps. They finally emerge to attack lightly defended facilities of the Dutch Bataafse Petroleum Maatschappij (BPM) and Nederlandsche Koloniale Petroleum Maatschappij (NKPM),a refinery for the American Standard Oil Company. Japanese soldiers are seen after a day's battle with the defending contingent of Royal Netherlands East Indies Army home guard. A rear guard group of them and Dutch technicians, are made prisoners. Shell fired by departing Dutch forces strike oil storage tanks. Smoke rises in several places and one very heavy black smoke plume rises near the camera. Soon the area is a blazing inferno. The Japanese troops succeed in confining fires to the oil tanks, extinguish them, and save the cracking towers and other essential oil refinery structures. The Japanese flag is seen atop one. (Note: Two technicians seen in white, at TC: 02:05, are BPM workers. The one on the left is Christiaan Stapels. He died at a Japanese prisoner of war camp in June 1945.)
