Allied forces invading Normandy France, during World War 2. Formations of U.S. A-20 bombers from the 416th Bomb Group, in striped paint, fly over the Allied invasion task force in the English Channel. Allied warships begin bombarding the French coast. Allied troops climb down rope nets from their transport ships into landing craft, and head toward the beaches. A landing craft is struck and sinks with troops aboard. Troops on landing craft from the USS Bayfield (APA-33) hit the beach. U.S. soldiers on the beach being hit by German machine gun fire. Others seeking refuge under a cliff where they treat the wounded.
One month after D-Day, Allied forces continue advances across Normandy,France. German General and high ranking staff surrender to U.S. Major General Lawton Collins. U.S. artillery pounds German positions. On shell has 'Happy 4th Adolph' written on it. General Eisenhower greets and American soldier in the field, as Lieutenant General Omar Bradley, stands nearby. Church bells ring and French population celebrates Bastille Day (July 14th). American soldiers join in dancing at a town square during the celebrations. U.S, troops march along a road, one wearing a bowler hat. U.S. troops, firing machine guns, mortars, and recoiless rifles engage the Wehrmacht 352nd Division and other German defenders in costly battles amongst the hedgerows of Normandy. German troops surrendering. Wounded U.S. troops being treated. U.S. Sherman tanks and infantry moving along the hedgerows. A fallen U.S. soldier inside a hedgerow. U.S. troops enjoy a lull in battle. One naps in a farm field, while another chases a chicken. One GI reads the Stars & Stripes newspaper and another reads a letter from home. Several U.S. soldiers bathe in a creek while being protected by armed sentries.
U.S. 9th Infantry Division troops use mine detectors in the Hurtgen Forest of Germany during World War 2. A soldier sweeps for mines on a snow covered road. He detects something and marks the spot with a warning. U.S. troops setting up camp in the forest. They use trenching tools to dig foxholes. Medics assist a wounded soldier through the forest. Eastern Front battle of Soviet army as it repels the German Wehrmacht from a Soviet city, and captures German POW's. The German prisoners are marched into Soviet camps in winter snow covered landscape under guard of Russian Army soldiers.
