Activities of the Seabees at Munda Point in the Solomon Islands during World War 2. Views of utter destruction from the U.S bombardment of Munda. Destroyed buildings, facilities, Japanese airplanes and dead Japanese soldiers. Leafless trees and damaged wooded area. Seabees commence cleanup and construction. They cremate and bury the dead Japanese. Trucks and bulldozers move over muddy terrain to level the land to construct an airstrip. Views of the steady progress of construction over the period from August 8 to August 12, 1943. The airstrip is completed within 5 days. On the 5th day a Navy F4F aircraft lands on the coral runway. . The pilot in the cockpit smiles. The Spirit of 76 is painted on his airplane. Views of other F4Fs landing on the coral runway.
Japanese shipping attacked by American submarine around Palau Island in the Pacific. Japanese ship is seen in the distance smoking and on fire after having been hit by 4'' shell fire from U.S. Navy submarine. Views as submarine gradually approaches the burning ship. Column of smoke rises from the Japanese ship. Water waves roll over the stern of the surfaced American submarine, underway, as camera continues to focus on the hit Japanese ship in the distance. Japanese shipping attacked by American submarine around Palau Island in the Pacific. Periscope view of Japanese freighter hit by torpedoes. Freighter is seen prior to torpedo hit for a few seconds, and then a large explosion is seen and the freighter throws up billows of smoke. Periscope view continues to track target ship which appears to be sinking rapidly. A second explosion and then a third dramatic explosion is seen as the target ship is sinking. (World War II period).
