Destroyer Escort,USS Frament (DE 677) is commissioned during World War 2. Lieutenant Commander S. T. McAdam, Jr., in command, reads his orders to crew assembled on deck. Tug boats move the ship away from the pier. DE-677 underway in shakedown cruise.Officers review daily plans for shakedown cruise. General Quarters alarm is sounded and crew mans battle stations. Gun crews at 1.1 inch, 40mm, and 3 inch guns. Crew members positioned to launch depth charges ("ash cans") , torpedoes, and to fire "hedge hogs" (clusters of bombs). Navy aircraft tows a canvas sleeve target for crew to practice fire against. Antiaircraft gun crews shoot down target.
Colonel Bernt Balchen prepares to attempt rescue of the survivors of the SS Viking vessel. The vessel was rocked by explosion about eight miles off the Horse Islands. It caught fire during shooting of film The Viking. Balchen is seen consulting with two other men beside his parked Sikorsky S-38 sesquiplane amphibious aircraft named "Colonial." Colonel Balchen climbs into the flying boat, starts the twin engines, taxis, and takes off on the mission from Boston.
Collegiettes wreck and demolish an historic Wellesley college building. Female students move out the furniture, smash windows, rip down doors, and build a bonfire to burn much of it. Two girls jokingly try to make calls using disconnected old telephones. The girls are destroying the building to make way for new college structure.
Fishermen catch Herring fish in streams of New England. Herring come in these streams from sea to lay eggs. Fishermen use fishnet to catch the fish. Fishermen put the fish in small wooden barrels.
United States President Woodrow Wilson arrives back home to United States after returning from France. He is accompanied by Mrs. Edith Wilson. A huge procession gathered to mark the welcome of the President. U.S. flags decorated all over. Crowd gathered to greet him. President and his wife sitting in the motor car and greeting the people.
