A pair of clerks neglects work to eavesdrop on their boss’ affair
Dramatized scenes: A pair of clerks play a game of cards in a broker’s office. Their boss, a broker, arrives in the office. The cards are thrown down in great haste and the clerks quickly pretend to be engaged in their work. Their boss looks over the mail and sits behind an adjacent screen to read the newspaper. A lady enters the office to speak with the boss. One of the clerks shows the lady the way to the broker. The broker and the lady flirt with one another and they began to make out. One of the clerks discovers the scene and calls the attention of his co-worker. The two clerks eavesdrop on the couple until one of the chairs is suddenly tipped over by the office boy and the clerks and screen fall upon the unsuspecting broker. The broker angrily throws off his coat and proceeds to clear out the office. One of the clerks becomes frightened and jumps through the window into the corridor while the other is unceremoniously fired through the door.
Man shaves face with a dull razor
An old man shaves his face with a dull razor while seated at his shaving table. The man catches hold of the brush and hurriedly coats his face with the foaming soap and makes a second attempt at removing his beard. He wipes his cheeks. He scrapes and scrapes, making painful facial expressions as the razor grows duller with every stroke. The old man winces every time he draws the razor across his face.
A couple perform magic tricks at a café
Dramatized scenes: A well-dressed couple enter a fashionable café. The waiter assists the man and the woman to sit. The couple checks the restaurant menu, they make an order of boiled eggs and Welsh rarebit. The obliging waiter delivers their order. The couple break open their eggs, and two beautiful white chickens fly across the room. The diners then perform a similar trick with the Welsh rarebit just served. The man lifts the food cloche, and two beautiful white rabbits hop from the dish and are seen kicking and squirming as they are lifted to the floor.
A man dreams of a demon summoning two women out of his paintings
Dramatized scenes: A demon in period costume named Mephisto enters an artist’s studio. The artist is asleep in the corner. Mephisto notices paintings on the wall and signals the women in the paintings to come to life. The women step down from their frames and walk forward. They admire their costumes after coming to life. The demon then touches the artist on the shoulder, awaking him, and disappears. The artist wakes up to find the two women from his painting alive. He jumps up to embrace her, only for the girl to disappear before he embraces her a second time. He turns his attention to the second woman, kissing her hand and holds her. She disappears when he attempts to embrace her. The two women reappear behind him. A scuffle ensues. The man tries to hit the women with a stick before they disappear again. The demon reappears, taking the women’s place. The man pleads to the demon. The demon does his magic, the artist is asleep again. The demon conjures the women back to their frames before tapping the sleeping artist and taking his leave. The artist finds the women in their paintings. Realizing that it was just a dream, he grabbed a bottle of alcohol and drank from it.
A ghost spooks a guest and a hotel landlord
Dramatized scenes: A hotel landlord enters a room with a guest named Josh. The guest inspects the room as the landlord places some chairs. The guest takes a seat beside the landlord who tells him a rumor of a ghost in the room. The guest becomes frightened, but the landlord calms him down. A clock behind them. The ghost appears behind the two men, slapping the cheeks of the guest. The guest hits the landlord, knocking him off the chair. After an argument, the guest and the landlord sit on their chairs again. The ghost reappears and hits the landlord on the cheek. The landlord gets up and knocks the guest off his chair. Each one accuses the other of striking him. The ghost reappears behind the landlord, scaring him out of the room. The ghost sits on the landlord’s vacant chair. The guest raves beside the ghost.
British Gordon Highlanders fight Boer cavalry troops in the Battle of Mafeking
A company of British Army Gordon Highlanders preparing for a charge on the Boer entrenchments seen in the distance in the Battle of Mafeking during the Second Boer War. Two pieces of artillery have just been placed in position by the Boer troops, and the artillery immediately open fire upon the approaching Highlanders. The Highlanders charge after several volleys from the Boer battery. A troop of Boer Cavalry attack the advancing Highlanders on the flank. All but one of the artillery crew retreats except for a deserter who is shot by a Boer cavalryman. Boer cavalry and Gordon Highlanders engage in hand-to-hand combat in the battlefield. A cavalryman falls mortally wounded from his horse, who walks off the field with an empty saddle.
