British Gordon Highlanders fight Boer cavalry troops in the Battle of Mafeking
A company of British Army Gordon Highlanders preparing for a charge on the Boer entrenchments seen in the distance in the Battle of Mafeking during the Second Boer War. Two pieces of artillery have just been placed in position by the Boer troops, and the artillery immediately open fire upon the approaching Highlanders. The Highlanders charge after several volleys from the Boer battery. A troop of Boer Cavalry attack the advancing Highlanders on the flank. All but one of the artillery crew retreats except for a deserter who is shot by a Boer cavalryman. Boer cavalry and Gordon Highlanders engage in hand-to-hand combat in the battlefield.
