(Note: This flag-raising constituted an act of defiance by U.S. Red Cross and Army medical personnel, since British medical authorities had opposed starting an American hospital in Archangel. It became the first Red Cross Hospital there, that was jointly staffed by Russian and American Red Cross nurses.
