Italian aviator Francesco De Pinedo dies in fiery crash during takeoff in his Bellanca aircraft, the Santa Lucia
Italian aviator, General Francesco de Pinedo, attempts takeoff in his Bellanca airplane, named the Santa Lucia. The Italian flag is painted on the aircraft rudder. The ship is heavily laden with fuel for a solo long-distance flight from Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, New York, to Baghdad, Iraq. The aircraft is seen to wander during the takeoff roll and with loss of control, crashes near a fence alongside the runway. The aircraft breaks into pieces, and with one wing sticking straight up in the air, begins to burn. It is immediately consumed in fire. Vehicles rush to the scene. Hangar number 6, at Floyd Bennett field, can be seen in background, with "Erickson and Remmert, Inc." painted on it. De Pinedo died in the accident.

Vintage aviation attempt: Two men push a third man on a bicycle. The rider is dressed as an aviator. The bicycle has wings and empennage fastened to it like an ornithopter aircraft, though it is unclear if the wings flap or not. Another man runs alongside, carrying a bucket of water. As the stunt bicycle speed increases, one of the men strikes a match and ignites a rocket in the tail of the bicycle. The rocket boost causes the cyclist to lose control and he and the bicycle turn to the left and fall to the ground amidst smoke and fire. The man with the bucket arrives and douses the rider with water.

U.S. Navy Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat fighter aircraft, from Squadron VF-12, with the number 59 painted on its fuselage, bursts into flames during landing on the deck of the aircraft carrier, USS Randolph (CV-15), in the Pacific near Okinawa. The F6F, piloted by Ensign Lowell Rund, experienced engine problems soon after takeoff and returned to the Randolph. As his F6F snags an arresting cable on the deck of the carrier, his centerline drop tank shackles fail and the 150 gallon fuel tank flies forward into the propeller, bursting into flames that engulf the aircraft. F6F-5 number 58, from the same squadron, gets caught in flames sweeping part of the flight deck of the Randolph. Firefighters carrying hose, respond. Other fire on flight deck seen in the background. They successfully rescue the pilot of number 58, who is seen on deck, as crew members help him remove his flight gear. (Not shown: Ensign Lowell Rund of number 59 was also rescued. He suffered third degree burns on his face and arms.) (World War II period).

A Seabee uses semaphore flags to direct an LST to beach area. Seabees build shelters for war materiel and dressing stations where allied wounded are treated.
