Lieutenant General Lucian K. Truscott assumes command of the 5th Army in Italy during World War II
On 10 December 1944, Lieutenant General Lucian K. Truscott, Jr. (newly appointed Commander of the 5th Army) arrives by jeep at a U.S. Army encampment in Italy during World War II. He is escorted the headquarters of II Corps, on the Apennine front below Bologna, where he is greeted by Major General Geoffrey T. Keyes. They walk together around a building. The next day General Truscott is seen saluting as he is escorted by Major General Willis D. Crittenberger, Commander 1V Corps. Next, General Truscott is seen at the headquarters of the Brazilian Expeditionary Forces contingent of the 5th Army, where he greets its Commander, General João Baptista Mascarenhas de Morais and his aides. As General Truscott leaves, his jeep passes a Brazilian honor of soldiers who salute him. Brigadier General, Donald Carlson. new Chief of Staff of the 5th Army, accompanies Generals Truscott and Crittenberger to a forward observation post near the village of Castelluccio. They observe from a bunker overlooking a valley, where white smoke is rising. (Narrator states that the smoke screen indicates the position of the Allied line of the IV Corps Sector on 11 December.) Next the three American officers are seen making their way up a mountain side, with smoke rising from the town of Vergato, in the background below, where heavy fighting is taking place. A seated band of musicians plays. Scene shifts to the deck of the battleship USS Missouri, where Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu in formal attire sits to sign documents of surrender. General Douglas MacArthur, and other senior allied officers, stand nearby as Soviet Lieutenant General Kuzma Nikolaevish Derevyanko sits to sign for the USSR. Japanese civilians living in Korea, during the Japanese occupation, are seen moving with their belongings, to be relocated back in Japan.

Opening scene shows a battlefield wooden cross marking the grave of Private Robert. Woods. His photograph is shown.The narrator is an American Pastor of a predominantly African American congregation speaking from the pulpit about men who served America during World War 2. He cites U.S. Army bomber pilot, Colin Kelly, whose photograph is also seen. The pastor also mentions Meyer Levine, Kelly's bombardier (unseen) and an African American sailor, named Dory Miller, who shot down Japanese aircraft while defending the battleship West Virginia during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Miller is seen shaking hands with officers on the deck of a Navy ship. Camera focuses on a banner in the church displaying stars for the members of the congregation in the Armed Forces. He leads in a prayer of thanks for "this land which our fathers have helped to build." Camera pans over the congregation. The choir and congregation join in singing "Onward Christian Soldiers." Next, a large formation of African American soldiers marches in a parade. They wear uniforms including M1917 steel helmets, and carry rifles and field packs. Scene updates to African American soldiers marching wearing World War 2 M1 steel helmets. Scene shifts to African American Army Colonel and another officer reviewing marching troops on a snowy field. Next, African American women in the WAC (Women's Army Corps) are seen marching. African American troops are seen, again, parading in World War 1 steel helmets, and then others are seen parading in garrison caps. More views of these various groups parading with a glimpse of mounted cavalry inserted, as well. As the film ends, the background music is the singing of "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho."
