During the Battle of the Leyte Gulf, a Japanese A6M5 Zero aircraft carries out one of the first kamikaze attacks of World War II, diving and attacking the U.S. Navy Escort Carrier USS Suwanee (CVE-27) in the Leyte Gulf of the Philippines. Clouds of black smoke billow from the hit carrier. Some Navy sailors from the hit USS Suwanee in the water, blown overboard by the explosion, approaching USS Sangamon (CVE-26), also in Task Unit 77.4.1 ("Taffy 1") for assistance.
