Jet airliner American Airlines Flight 1 crashes into Pumpkin Patch Channel of Jamaica Bay in New York soon after takeoff from Idlewild Airport (now John F. Kennedy International Airport), bound for Los Angeles. Rescuers and the police inspect the area. The ruins of the crashed Boeing 707-123B on a marshy area and in the Bay. Skin divers board boats to head out and search for bodies. Some bodies of victims are carried away on stretchers.
